Rolex Gilt Explorer Dial Ref. 5500 "American Airlines" Provenance

We are offering a rare and stunning Explorer, reference 5500, fitted with its original gilt dial. Early Rolex sports watches feature these gilt dials, known for their glossy finish. The text and outer minute markers appear in a gold color, which is why they are referred to as "gilt."

This gold color actually comes from the brass dial base showing through, as the dials were printed with the text ‘in relief.’ Despite its 34mm case size, this watch is exceptionally striking and makes quite an impression. The lume on the 3-6-9 markers is immaculate, and the gilt text is flawless. The case is in very good and strong overall condition.

The watch is fitted with a nice Rolex rivet Oyster bracelet, ref. 7205, with end links ref. 50 and a clasp stamped 4 64. But there’s more to tell about this piece! On the outside of the clasp, a steel “AA” is attached, signifying that this watch was gifted by American Airlines to one of their pilots for XX years of service. The watch has been fully checked and regulated by our watchmaker.

Feel free to reach out if you'd like to learn more or add this lovely piece to your collection!
